Board & Train for Basic Commands - Check!

Duke - Snook and I are so proud of you!

He just finished a two-week board and train to work on his consistency with basic commands. It was kind of weird without him around even though it was only two weeks. Snook loved being the only dog for that time period!

He came home with much more skill than before! Kudos to Shanna (the trainer) for getting through to him and teaching him new stuff! (Check out the video on his off-leash recall!)

A few highlights...

  • Duke was required to sit and wait at the door every morning. He tried to be stubborn but learned it wouldn't really work so he sat and then looked up like he is asking for permission. Since coming home he does that every time now at the sliding door.

  • He learned how to do the place command on a cot. I make him go to his place and stay there while I feed Snook. Only once has he tried to break this since he came home! I can also say the word "dinner" and he goes there automatically!

  • The other commands Shanna worked with him on off-leash commands too. When she brought him home, we went to the front yard and she showed me his loose-leash heel command (which was amazing!) and then she told me to take his leash off.... my face showed my reaction of "WHAT?! You want me to let him off leash where there is no fence?!?!" To my disbelief, I took the leash off and told him to heel and he heeled perfectly without even trying to run away! I released him and he just played in the front yard and stayed near us. WOW!

We will continue to work on these commands and also introduce others that he will need for service dog training. Right now, we are introducing a "paw" command because this is how he will alert.

He is headed to Florida for scent work training in late-March for a month with Snook's trainer, Erin. She did such a great job with Snook and I am excited to see how much he learns from that training too!

Thank you Shanna and Elite Obedience Training - Ankeny!

P.S. Duke is doing so good with his training and he needs your support to keep being able to learn new things and to ultimately become the best service dog he can be! If you would like to donate toward his training expenses, please click on Help Train Duke on this site and it will take you to the page to submit your support. Thank you.
